At the end of the 19th century, Swedish physician Axel Munthe restored the ruins of a 10th century chapel dedicated to San Michele, discovering the ruins of an ancient Roman villa full of precious finds including the Sphinx, dating back to the reign of Ramesses II, now a symbol of the villa.
