The Aragonese Castle of Otranto, with boundary walls forming a defensive stronghold, has a pentagonal plan, surrounded by a large moat and marked by four towers. The fortress inspired the first Gothic novel in history, “The Castle of Otranto” by H. Walpole (1764).
