The town of Stabiae, along with the more famous Pompeii and Herculaneum, was buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, remaining under layers of pumice for centuries. In the Roman age, it was a holiday resort: decorated residential villas and the ruins of rustic villas can now be visited.
