Built between the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC and attributed to Hieron, tyrant of Syracuse, it lies on a pre-existing natural slope. In the Roman era, it underwent drastic changes. It is smaller than the theatre of Syracuse and is directly connected, through a tunnel, to the “Agora” of the city and to the “Bouleuterion” (council house).
