Day 1 :

Passignano

Arrival in the late afternoon at Passignano, a town with mediaeval origins situated on the shores of Lake Trasimeno. Check-in at hotel, welcome cocktail, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2 :

Assisi/Perugia/Passignano

Full day with guide dedicated to Assisi and Perugia. Starting from the town of birth of St Francis, the first stop is at the Basilica, built over his tomb and skilfully restored after an earthquake. The Piazza del Comune takes us back in time with its mansions dating back to the Middle Ages. The visit continues with the Basilica of St Clare, the founder of the Poor Clares and buried in the church where the crucifix that spoke to St Francis is still conserved. Lunch in a restaurant, then continuing to Perugia, the capital of Umbria. The city centre has a host of attractions from many different periods, with the Fontana Maggiore fountain, a masterpiece of Gothic sculpture, the Palazzo dei Priori, the town hall that dates back to Perugia’s golden age, the Etruscan Arch from the 3rd century BC, and the Rocca Paolina fortress, with its unexpected but fascinating underground passages. Return to hotel in the late afternoon for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3 :

Lake Trasimeno/Gubbio/Passignano

A short cruise in the morning on Lake Trasimeno, Italy’s fourth biggest lake, with the three islands of Isola Maggiore, Isola Minore and Isola Polvese at its centre. Visit to the Isola Maggiore, the only inhabited island, with an old fishing village and characteristics paths that wind past small Romanesque churches and a striking castle. Return to hotel for lunch. Visit in the afternoon to the centre of Gubbio for a plunge into the Middle Ages, with the old San Martino quarter, the Cathedral and finally the upper part of the town, conveniently linked with a public lift service, with visits to the San Francesco Church, the main square and the Palazzo dei Consoli. Free time for a relaxing stroll in the narrow streets lined with old houses and craftwork shops. Gubbio is famous for its pottery production and fine food specialities, like truffles and cheese. Return to hotel for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4 :

Todi/Montefalco or Bevagna/Torgiano/Passignano

A full-day guided visit to Umbria’s green heartlands and mediaeval townships, starting with Todi. The main square of this hilltop town is flanked by the three civic mansions and the Cathedral, and other monuments include the Franciscan San Fortunato Church and the church of Santa Maria della Consolazione, an imposing Renaissance construction. Lunch in a restaurant, followed by a relaxing afternoon stopping in the town of Montefalco, with a panoramic position giving splendid views over the surrounding valleys or in the town of Bevagna, where visits can be made to four “mediaeval workshops”, with skilled craftsmen in costume demonstrating the arts of making paper, candles and other products using the original techniques of the period. The excursion ends with a tasting session at a farm in Torgiano, with three wines, bread and extra virgin olive oil made on the farm itself, with the possibility of a visit to the Wine Museum. Return to hotel for dinner and overnight stay.
