Marche: Hidden Treasures of Italy

Day 1 :

Destination the Marche region

Group arrival in Senigallia, an elegant seaside resort located 40 km north of Ancona and a starting point for all planned excursions during the week. Welcome cocktail, dinner, and overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 2 :

Urbino and Pesaro

Morning dedicated to a guided tour of Urbino, one of the capitals of the Italian Renaissance. The Ducal Palace (Palazzo Ducale), one of the most beautiful Renaissance residences and home to the National Gallery of the Marche, is the symbol of the city. Its interior allows a visit to approximately 80 rooms, housing masterpieces by famous artists such as Raphael, Titian, and Piero della Francesca. Continuation towards Pesaro, the birthplace of Rossini. Guided tour of the historic centre with the composer’s birthplace, the Cathedral preserving splendid mosaics, and the Ducal Palace. Return to the hotel late afternoon, dinner, and overnight stay.

Day 3 :

Ascoli Piceno and Macerata

Traveling south along the coast, we reach the picturesque city of Ascoli Piceno, known as ‘the city of 100 towers’, rich in Roman and medieval monuments.Guided tour of the historic centre: the People’;s Palace (Palazzo del Popolo), the San Francesco Church, the Merchants’Loggia (Loggia dei Mercanti), and finally, Piazza del Popolo, considered one of the most beautiful in Italy, a true Renaissance salotto (drawing-room) with its historic Caffè Meletti. Free time to taste one of the city’s specialities, namely, stuffed olives and anisetta (anise liqueur). In the afternoon, guided tour of Macerata with the famous Sferisterio, a theatrical structure of unique architectural style. In the heart of the city is Piazza della Libertà, featuring the Merchants’Loggia, the Baroque S. Paolo Church, and the Rossi Theatre, one of the most beautiful in the Marche region. Return to the hotel, dinner, and overnight stay.

Day 4 :

Gradara and the Panoramic Road

Morning dedicated to a guided tour of the medieval village of Gradara, a practically intact town, surrounded by walls and fortified gates. Visit the castle, famous for the tragic story of Paolo and Francesca sung by Dante in the Divine Comedy. Free time for shopping and lunch in one of the many small restaurants inside the village. In the afternoon, departure with the guide for Gabicce Monte, perched on the sea, offering a splendid view of the Romagna coast. Continuation south along the famous Panoramic Road, partly alongside the sea and partly in the hills. Stop in the delightful medieval village of Fiorenzuola di Focara. Return to Senigallia late afternoon, dinner, and overnight stay.

Day 5 :

Frasassi Caves, Jesi, and Wine tasting

After breakfast, departure for the Frasassi Caves, among the longest and most beautiful in Europe, with their splendid enchanted and lunar landscapes. Guided tour of this natural masterpiece. Continuation to Jesi, birthplace of “Verdicchio”, the famous local wine. In the afternoon, guided tour of the ancient historic centre surrounded by 15th-century walls, stop at the Municipal Art Gallery (Pinacoteca Comunale) and the Pergolesi Theatre. Finally, late afternoon, wine tasting in suggestive 17th-century cellars. Return to the hotel, dinner, and overnight stay.

Day 6 :

Loreto and Senigallia

Morning dedicated to a guided tour of Loreto, a famous site considered one of the most important and oldest Marian pilgrimage sites in the Catholic world. Visit the sanctuary with the basilica that houses the Holy House of the Virgin Mary of Nazareth, transported, according to tradition, by angels to Loreto. Afternoon of relaxation on the “velvet beach” of Senigallia or shopping and visit of the centre: the Ercolani Arcades (Portici Ercolani), the Annona Forum (Foro Annonario), and Piazza del Duca, with its imposing Roveresca Fortress. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 7 :

Ancona and the Conero Coast

Morning dedicated to visiting Ancona, the regional capital. Walk with a guide in the historic centre, visit the Cathedral, the Santa Maria della Piazza Church, Piazza del Papa, and the Fountain of the 13 Jets (Fontana delle Tredici Cannelle). Continuation towards the Conero Coast, free time for lunch in Sirolo. In the afternoon, walk with a naturalist guide along the trails of Mount Conero that lead to the beach of the magnificent Portonovo Bay, with the Romanesque Santa Maria Abbey. On the return, tasting of “Rosso Conero” wine at a production company. Return to the hotel, dinner, and overnight stay.

Day 8 :

Departure

Breakfast at the hotel and end of our services.
