Commissioned by Pope Gregory IX, the Basilica – with “Papal” status since 2006 – houses the remains of Saint Francis. Included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, it consists of two superimposed churches built in different eras, i.e. in the Umbrian Romanesque era and in the French Gothic era.
