Built from 1174 onwards at the behest of William II of Altavilla, it is renowned for its fine decorative mosaics. The beautiful mosaics of the apse with the “Christ Pantocrator” are very well-known. The Crucifix and Saint Benedict chapels are two of the most notable examples of Sicilian Baroque.
