Italy’s oldest monastery, founded in 529 by Saint Benedict of Nursia, it was completely destroyed during World War II and was later rebuilt in Neapolitan Baroque style. The crypt of the abbey church, which was carved from the living rock of the mountain, is decorated with mosaics.
